Training for practical construction skills in Kumanovo within project “Developing Sustainable Models for the Roma employability”

Within the project “Sustainable Models for Roma Employment, from 30th of August to 7th September 2017, the practical part of the training for construction skills was organized for the participants of Kumanovo. The practical training was realized at primary school 11 Oktomvri.

Participants of this training are Roma people who want to improve their construction skills and become active workers in the construction sector in Kumanovo and the region. In particular, the participants under the guidance and instructions of representatives from local construction companies had a chance to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the past trainings on the spot. The instructors paid special attention to the energy efficiency sections regarding the application of all materials in the construction industry.
The practical part covered the following:
 Preparation of an external wall for the application of facade, application of facade and painting;
 Preparation for plasterboard placement, plasterboard placement and finishing application of abrib;
 Preparing the frame for a pvc window / door frame, assembling, and placing on the spot;
 Preparation for masonry, masonry, final application of plaster.

Yet, not only that the participants gained practical construction skills with this training the study conditions of the pupils from the elementary school 11 Oktomvri have been improved. Namely, in this school the last construction works have been made at the time of its construction, in the 1960s of the previous century. Also, large number of the pupils who attend classes in this school in Kumanovo are from Roma origin.

The pactical construction skills training is being implemented within the framework of the project “Developing Sustainable Models for the Roma employability” funded by the European Union. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the integration of Roma into the labor market by improving their skills for employment in the construction sector and the housing and energy efficiency sector. The main goal of the project is to increase the potential for employment of the Roma population, providing appropriate and market-valued personal characteristics (knowledge, skills, motivation) and facilitating access to the labor market by creating a “employment network” that will link the construction companies and potential Romani workers. Implementers of the project are Habitat Macedonia, DROM and Creation. The project will be implemented in the municipalities of Kumanovo and Prilep.
